Why Your Tank's Water Is Never Just Water

When you set up a brand-new fish tank, the water looks clean and safe — but from a biological standpoint, it's a blank slate with nothing in it to protect your fish. Every time a fish eats, breathes, and produces waste, it releases ammonia directly into the water. Ammonia is acutely toxic to fish even at very low concentrations, damaging their gills and nervous system quickly.

In a healthy, established aquarium, this ammonia doesn't accumulate because beneficial bacteria process it continuously. These bacteria aren't something you add from a bottle (though starter cultures exist) — they grow naturally on filter media, gravel, and tank surfaces over several weeks. Until that bacterial colony is established, your fish are swimming in a chemical environment that becomes more dangerous every day.

Understanding the nitrogen cycle helps you see why new fishkeepers lose fish in the first month — it's almost never bad luck. It's almost always chemistry.

The Three Stages of the Nitrogen Cycle

The cycle moves through three distinct phases, each driven by a different type of bacteria:

  1. Ammonia phase: Fish waste and uneaten food decompose, releasing ammonia (NH₃). In a new tank with no bacteria present, ammonia climbs steadily. You'll typically see a spike in the first one to two weeks. Even small amounts — above 0.25 ppm (parts per million) — are harmful.
  2. Nitrite phase: A group of bacteria called Nitrosomonas colonize the tank and begin converting ammonia into nitrite (NO₂⁻). Nitrite is less immediately toxic than ammonia but is still dangerous to fish at elevated levels. During cycling, you'll see ammonia levels drop while nitrite rises sharply.
  3. Nitrate phase: A second bacterial group — primarily Nitrospira — converts nitrite into nitrate (NO₃⁻). Nitrate is relatively safe at low concentrations and is managed through regular partial water changes. When your ammonia and nitrite both read zero and nitrate is detectable, your cycle is complete.

How to Cycle a New Tank

There are two main approaches to cycling a new aquarium:

Fishless cycling (recommended for beginners)

Add a small, controlled source of ammonia to the tank — either pure ammonia drops designed for aquarium use or a small amount of fish food that will decompose. This feeds the developing bacteria without putting live fish at risk. Test the water every few days with a liquid test kit and watch for ammonia to rise, then fall, then for nitrite to rise and fall, and finally for nitrate to appear.

Fish-in cycling

Some beginners add a few hardy fish (such as zebra danios) while the tank cycles. This is riskier — fish are exposed to ammonia and nitrite throughout the process. If you go this route, daily partial water changes of 20–30% are essential to keep toxin levels low, and you should test water every single day. This method is generally not recommended unless you're closely monitoring and prepared to act quickly.

Speed Up Cycling With Seeding

You can shorten the cycling period significantly by 'seeding' your new tank. Add a handful of gravel, a piece of filter media, or a small decoration from an established, disease-free aquarium. These surfaces carry live beneficial bacteria that immediately begin colonizing your new tank, cutting weeks off the process.

Whichever method you choose, never add fish to a tank that has not completed the nitrogen cycle unless you are prepared to perform very frequent water changes and test daily. It's also worth reading up on common fish-keeping myths — many beginners underestimate what fish actually need to thrive.

Reading Your Water: What to Test and What It Means

A liquid test kit — not paper test strips, which are far less accurate — should measure four parameters during cycling:

  • Ammonia (NH₃): Should reach zero before adding fish.

  • Nitrate (NO₃⁻): Should be present but ideally below 20–40 ppm in a fish tank.
  • pH: Beneficial bacteria prefer a stable pH above 7.0; very acidic water (below 6.0) can stall the cycle.

Tap Water and Chlorine

Most municipal tap water contains chlorine or chloramine, both of which kill beneficial bacteria and harm fish. Always treat tap water with a dechlorinator (sodium thiosulfate-based products are widely available) before adding it to your tank during cycling or water changes. Chloramine requires a product specifically rated to neutralize it, as standard dechlorinators may not be sufficient.

Once your tank shows zero ammonia, zero nitrite, and a measurable nitrate reading on two consecutive days, the cycle is considered complete and fish can be introduced — gradually, a few at a time, to avoid overloading the bacterial colony with too much ammonia at once.
